Psalms From The Cave - Courage In The Dark

Hello and welcome to Van Life Devotions.
Darkness has a way of magnifying our fears. When I wake through the darkness of night concerned about things on my mind, often I exaggerate those concerns causing greater worry and anxiety.
It's no wonder David began Psalm 27 by declaring that the Lord is his light. He knew what it was like to face dark days.
Although Psalm 27 doesn't specifically say David wrote it from a cave, it reflects the kind of challenges he often faced while fleeing from Saul and other kings. Surrounded by enemies and uncertain about the future, David chose to focus not on his circumstances, but on the character of God. His courage was grounded in God's mighty presence.
David doesn't deny that danger exists. He speaks of the wicked, armies, war, false witnesses, and those seeking his life. Yet through this psalm is an unshakable confidence: God is greater than any of these threats.
The turning point comes in verse 4: “One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life…” (Psalms 27:4 NIV).
David's greatest desire wasn't simply to escape his problems—it was to remain close to God. He understood that courage grows in the presence of the Lord. When we keep our eyes on Him, fear begins to lose its grip.
If you are experiencing a dark season with what appears to be a bleak outcome, remember that God who was David's light is your light as well. Through Jesus, His presence shines into the darkest places, bringing hope, peace, and strength for each new day.
David closes his psalm with these words: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord”(Psalm 27:14 NIV).
Waiting isn’t easy, but it is never wasted. God is up to something even when we cannot see what He is doing. The darkness is not the end of the story. The Light of Jesus still shine.

Lord, You are my light when life feels dark and uncertain. Help me to trust You more than I trust my fears. Fill me with courage that comes from Your presence and give me strength to wait patiently for Your perfect timing. Thank You for never leaving me, even in the darkest valleys. Amen.
