Know What You Believe - 8 Are Miracles Possible?

Hello and welcome to Van Life Devotions. The bible is fall of miraculous interventions by God from the part of the Red Sea through to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For some, the miraculous is a huge stumbling block for the validity of the Christian faith, accepting what many scientists believe that “laws of nature that can’t be altered”.

But are there good reasons to think miracles are possible?

In the bible, one of Jesus’ disciples refuses to believe one of the biggest miracles – that Jesus came back to life after He was violently put to death. Everyone was telling Thomas that Jesus was resurrected but because He had not seen Jesus alive, he refused to believe. However, Thomas was open to such a huge miracle if he saw Jesus and touch His scars in his hands and side.

Perhaps you are like Thomas. You don’t believe in miracles because you haven’t seen one.

Here’s something to consider.

What if miracles are not violations of natural laws but rather events that transcend our current understanding of natural laws and the supernatural?

Imagine two people talking together. One is holding a glass of water and accidentally drops it. Gravity says the glass should fall and smash on whatever is beneath it. But if the other person quickly reaches out and incredibly catches it, the glass is saved from breaking and the water stays inside.

Christianity teaches that God can intervene in the world through supernatural acts. The resurrection of Jesus is a central example. After Jesus died on the cross and was laid in a tomb, God supernaturally raised Him back to life.

Thomas eventually met the resurrected Jesus with Jesus inviting Thomas to touch His crucifixion scars. Thomas believed.

Are miracles possible? That depends on your worldview. For Christians, miracles are not “violations” of nature but acts of God within creation with eyewitness testimony strong enough to justify belief.
